Dating to the late nineteenth century, this brass slug iron retains its original cast iron heating slug. Before the advent of electric irons, the removable slug would be heated in a stove or hearth before being inserted into the hollow body, providing a cleaner means of pressing garments and household linens than charcoal-filled irons.
