These hand-colored lithographic ‘plates’ originate from a 19th-century French provincial costume series documenting regional dress from the former Papal territory of Comtat Venaissin. Such illustrations were issued as part of a bound anthology in an effort to preserve disappearing rural traditions during a period of national modernization.
